After a succesful configure:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --enable-versioning --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-imap --with
-gd --with-zlib --enable-debug=no

Wehn make is run:
make: Fatal error in reader: Makefile, line 116: Unexpected end of line seen

That is it.

Ok, I looked at it.  It seems there is a colon on this line:

CPPFLAGS := $(INCLUDES) -I$(ZEND_DIR) -I$(srcdir)/TSRM

Removing it gets rid of the error.
