We are using Oracle 7.3.4

Using the function Ora_Logon, we pass connect string to Oracle. Mostly the logon works but occasionally we get an error.

Unable to connect to Oracle (Error while trying to retrieve
text for ORA-12154)

The Connect string is identical, regardless whether it is successful or not.

We tried to get around the problem by using pLogon to reduce the number of times the PHP logs on. The connect error occured much less frequently, but commit sql statements did not execute properly leaving a table locked.

We tried installing an oracle 8.1.5 client in the hope that this would be more reliable. But although PHP Oracle 8 functions compiled properly, the apache configure with PHP failed. A test compile aborted with the error cannot find rule for target dependencies. We noted that the oracle libraries in the Makefile generated by PHP configure did not correspond to the libraries in the oracle 8 installation
which have similar names but with an 8 appended for example libcore8.a and libnls8.a.

Thank you for taking the time to report a problem with PHP.
Unfortunately, PHP 3 is no longer supported. Please download
the latest version of PHP 4 from http://www.php.net/downloads.php

If you are able to reproduce the bug with one of the latest
versions of PHP, please change the PHP version on this bug report
to the version you tested and change the status back to "Open".
Again, thank you for your continued support of PHP.
