PHP4b2 does not have the calls to the PNG image functions (that are now replacing the patented GIF functions) in GD 1.6.3.  Fortunately, the PNG functions API seems identical to the old GIF ones.  

A patch (php4b2pngpatch.diff) can be found here:

***This patch comes with no warranties, it's a quick and dirty thing, but it allowed me to run the image example in the PHP Manual. YMMV***
