    test -f $PHP_PCRE_REGEX/libpcre.a && PCRE_LIBDIR=$PHP_PCRE_REGEX
    test -f $PHP_PCRE_REGEX/lib/libpcre.a && PCRE_LIBDIR=$PHP_PCRE_REGEX/lib

Please tell me, why one must have static libraries installed, if one only wants to link against shared libs ?????

I'm getting an ELSE error message in the same section while compiling the configure file. How was the problem(s) resolves? Must the test statements be removed?
