/e modifier in preg_replace is not available in PHP3.

Cf functions/pcre.c function _pcre_get_compiled_regex in PHP3 (3.0.18 and CVS) and
ext/pcre/php_pcre.c function pcre_get_compiled_regex in PHP4 
(4.1.2 and CVS).

I think PHP4 Changelog should state it more clearly, and preg-replace function should precise it too (cf example 2).

This bug has been fixed in CVS. You can grab a snapshot of the
CVS version at http://snaps.php.net/. In case this was a documentation 
problem, the fix will show up soon at http://www.php.net/manual/.
