try the following code.

<?
print "<=";
?>

it prints "<=>"


I dont understand why..... esp as the > seems to be outside the actual string.

This has been tried on a linuz with 4.12 and a win32 box running 4.2.1 as an apache module.

your browser is most probably making up markup.
try it with wget, lynx, links, cURL or similar agent, and reopen if you still see this.

I can not reproduce this, are you really sure the > is printed?

Try this script:

seems internet explorer isa resp for this one. when tested on Mozilla or Opera the extra > is not visable.
