What is your configure line?
What is your version of libmysqlclient (if you're using an other client than the built-in)?
[2002-03-11 06:04 UTC] kv at gki dot ru
mysql-4.0.1-alpha (libmysqlclient.so.11)

./configure --disable-cli --with-exec-dir=/usr/local/php/bin --with-mnogosearch=/usr/local/mnsh --enable-inline-optimization --with-freetype-dir=/usr/local --enable-trans-sid --enable-versioning --enable-ftp --with-xml --with-magic-quotes --enable-track-vars --enable-gd-native-ttf --with-png-dir=/usr/local --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-gd=/usr/local --with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local --with-gettext=/usr/local --with-bz2=/usr/local --with-zlib=/usr/local --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --enable-calendar --enable-safe-mode --enable-sysvsem --enable-sysvshm --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/php/ --with-exec-dir=/usr/local/php/bin --with-mod_charset --enable-bcmath

Do you happen to have some old mysql version in your system?
ie. you might have older libs somewhere in the libpath
which are found before the new ones.

I have the same/similar problem when I try to compile
against mysql-4.0.5. Apparently according to the mysql
website, the 'mysql_drop_db' call has been deprecated in
favor of issuing a plain "DROP DATABASE <foobar>" query
instead. So presumably, altering the library to issue a
mysql_query() instead of a simple_command() should do the
trick. I'm going to patch my copy and see if it works.
