I keyed this line incorrectly, but it didn't report it as a 
syntax error, instead, it set the value of $TOA to $var!

       $var="?";
       if ($TOA=="S" || $TOA=="E" || $TOA=$var):

Notice:  I missed an equal sign on the last comparison...
           But it should have reported it as syntax error.
