Slackware 3.6.0 box, kernel 2.2.x

Apache 1.3.4 and 1.3.6 (configure --with-layout=Apache --prefix=/opt/apache)

php 3.0.7, 3.0.8 and CVS (5/23/99) (configure --with-mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.6 --enable-track-vars)

When running 'make php' compile fails during linking with the following:

/usr/lib/crt1.o: In function `_start':
/usr/lib/crt1.o(.text+0x5a): undefined reference to `main'
main.o: In function `php3_write':
/usr/src/cvs/php3/main.c:181: undefined reference to `ap_rwrite'
main.o: In function `php3_puts':
/usr/src/cvs/php3/main.c:199: undefined reference to `ap_rputs'
(and so on...)

Compiles okay when I configure without --with-apache, and compiled okay when I just 'make && make install', however no php binary is made, and after compiling apache, the server dumps during any large php calls with the following in the apache erro_log:

[Wed May 19 19:37:30 1999] [notice] child pid 30096 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)
Out of memory (Needed 8192 bytes)

I have tried php 3.0.7, 3.0.8 and CVS version, with apache versions 1.3.4 and 1.3.6 all with identical results.

More serious than I originally thought - I have since formatted and reinstall slackware, this time 4.0. Using gcc 2.7.2.3 as the compiled.. i still get the identical results.

You must be doing something odd. Try following the instructions in INSTALL.DSO carefully and do an apxs install

Simply don't use "make php", but "make" instead. "make php" will try to build the CGI version which you do not want.
