In PHP I seem to be looking at different function calls depending on whether PHP is talking to a mSQL, or PostgreSQL or some other database. 

Shouldn't there just be a completely generic database object that I can use when building an SQL query, so my scripts don't have to know or care what database engine they're talking to?
