Starting httpd: Syntax error on line 258 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp4.so into server: undefined symbol: uncompress

This should be fixed with PHP 4.0.6, please try the 
latest release candidate:

http://www.php.net/~andi/php-4.0.6RC2.tar.gz

Just add --with-zlib-dir=/usr to your configure line.
