Set the following variables in php.ini:
register_globals = Off
session.save_handler = user

Then register a user handler in your php script with
session_set_save_handler(...);

Trace the calls of the handler functions in a log file and you will see:

The user defined session handlerfunction for WRITING the session will never be called!

With register_globals=On the same works!

This should be fixed in PHP 4.0.6, please try the
latest RC from:

http://www.php.net/~andi/php-4.0.6RC3.tar.gz

(if above link doesn't work, try changing RC3 to RC4)
