the mail function works fine if in the php.ini i set the smtp parameter to 'localhost' and i send the mails through my smtp server.
if i set in php.ini the name or the ip address of my ISP smtp server i got a 'server error' on the function line.

i believe this was fixed in 4.0.4pl1, do please try the latest release (4.0.5) or one of the RC's for 4.0.6, and see if it continues.  if it does, please reopen the bug....
