I just hit the "regression" described in #53432 and I didn't find anything about this in the migration guide for PHP 7.1. I found only http://php.net/manual/en/migration71.incompatible.php#migration71.incompatible.empty-string-index-operator which is not the same.

I think it should be stated in the migration guide that any use of [] operator on an empty string results in a warning ("Illegal string offset") and the operation does not work, leaving the variable to be an empty string still.

Since the fix for bug #53432 only targeted master, we document
it in the migration guide as incompatible change.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
