this problem is a duplicate first discovered in bug # 6784

calling curl_init() will cause php 4.0.2 to segfault as well as the standalone php binary. 

apache-mod_ssl-1.3.12.2.6.6.3
curl 7.3+ssl, 7.4pre3+ssl (as module, and compiled in)
php 4.0.2
