we have a little script that allows our pages to know if they are on our dev server or production server. This script ceased to function because the variable $HOSTNAME does not return anything

Please try <?php phpinfo() ;?> and check the Environment-section for HOSTNAME.
And please include your configure line and php.ini file here.

Try using this instead: $HTTP_ENV_VARS["HOSTNAME"]
