There seems to be no option to alter the mode, i.e. GEOIP_MEMORY_CACHE, which MaxMind benchmarks seem to imply would be the most performant:

GEOIP_SHARED_MEMORY is another configuration option I'd like 
to see (e.g., geoip.open_flags)
