I had odbc installed with 4.0.0 php but when upgraded to 4.0.1pl2 it causes the server to hang whenver the
;extension=php_odbc.dll
is uncommented.  Comment it back and the server works again.
Used the distributed php.ini file and only made the one change to uncomment the php_odbc.dll

Have you tried using ODBC with php_odbc.dll commented? It should work...
