To install it manually on red-hat alike system you can do (as root):

wget 'http://pecl.php.net/get/crack'
cd crack-version
phpize
./configure
make
make install - this step will provide location of /path/to/crack.so
echo 'extension=/path/to/crack.so' > /etc/php.d/crack.ini
/etc/init.d/httpd restart

Please note that on 64bit linuxes it will give an warning that is described at bug #9710.

On my prev comment this:

wget 'http://pecl.php.net/get/crack'
cd crack-version

Is missing one command, it should look like this:

wget 'http://pecl.php.net/get/crack'
tar xzf crack-version
cd crack-version

It seems that crack is not compiling anymore under PHP 5.4 or higher because safe_mode has been removed.

http://es.php.net/manual/en/features.safe-mode.php

You get errors:

php-crack-0.4/crack-0.4/crack.c:99:7: error: 'struct _php_core_globals' has no member named 'safe_mode'

Any idea on how to solve it on CentOS 6.5 64-bit?

I'm pasting the entire install, so maybe you can help figuring out and solving the issue:
