When php is compiled with even basic options e.g.

CC=gcc ./configure --prefix=/foo \
--with-config-file-path=/foo/conf \
--with-libxml-dir=/foo \
--with-apxs2=/foo/bin/apxs \
--with-iconv=shared,/foo \
--with-iconv-dir=/foo

the make install will fail at pear-installer with a 
segment fault. If --without-pear is used it will 
install but other than phpinfo(); and basic other basic
functions apache give the following

HTTP7765: error reading response header (Server closed connection)
