On a Merak IMAP mail server and c-client 2001, the imap_sort function using UIDs fails to return messages.  Switching to use imap_thread() returns the messages fine.

Reproduce code:
---------------
$sortmessages = imap_sort($this->_mailbox, SORTDATE, 1, SE_UID | SE_NOPREFETCH);


Expected result:
----------------
Array of messages

Actual result:
--------------
Empty array
