After experiencing several mysterious segfaults with php-5.0.2/apache2/oracle combination under heavy load I have made the following modifications to oci8.c file and the crashes have happily vanished for my case.

diff oci8.c
<       if (connection->session) {
>       if (connection->session && connection->session->explicit) {
<       return sess1->num = sess2->num;
>       return sess1->num == sess2->num;
