the pear installer should check to see if an extension that is about to be installed is actually being used

example: xdebug extension is loaded in php.ini
pear install -f xdebug....tgz
while segfault when the .so is copied to the php extension directory.

doing a simple php -r 'copy('.....xdebug.so','/usr/share/php/xdebug.so');'

will cause a bus error.

It may be worth adding to the package xml description
<provides_extension>xdebug</provides_extension>
and doing a extension_loaded() check prior to running ./configure.
