In earlier versions of PHP there was no need to define a variable before calling it ie.

if(!uname){
     echo("Incorect");
}

Now all my old code doesn't work and I must replace it with

if(empty($uname)){
     echo("incorrect");
}

I have tried turning the regiser_globals on and off in the .ini file as well as the adding ~E_NOTICE to teh error line...

The only thing that works is using a previous .ini file.. but I need to know WHY?
