CFLAGS="-O4" configure --with-apxs=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --with-config-file-path=/usr/local/apache/conf --without-oci8 --without-oracle --without-pgsql --with-mysql=shared,/usr --without-unixODBC --enable-ftp --disable-debug --enable-libgcc --enable-mm --enable-inline-optimization --with-gnu-ld --enable-sysvshm

configdefs.h correctly asserts
#define HAVE_MYSQL=1
#define COMPILE_DL_MYSQL 1

But when on a php page I try a mysql connection I get 
"undefined call to function mysql_connect()
In addition no MySQL support is shown in phpinfo() page
