An error was return when performing step 8 from
http://www.php.net/manual/installation.php3#INSTALL-UNIX

functions/gd.c:66: gdfontt.h: No such file or directory
functions/gd.c:67: gdfonts.h: No such file or directory
functions/gd.c:68: gdfontmb.h: No such file or directory
functions/gd.c:69: gdfontl.h: No such file or directory
functions/gd.c:70: gdfontg.h: No such file or directory
*** Error code 1

Those files come with the GD distribution.  You must not have installed them.
