I compiled Apache as a static binary, without any fancy stuff. The only module I enabled besides PHP 4.04 is mod_gzip. The line I used to compile PHP was ./configure --with-xml --enable-track-vars --with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql --with-zlib --with-apache=../apache_1.3.14

I used the php.ini-dist from the tar.gz file and changed only the output_handler to ob_gzhandler. Whenever I open a .php file in my browser the connection to Apache dies and the httpd processes die after a while.
