The documentation lists \\Recent in the settable flags but IMAP defines it as unsettable.
See http://ietf.org/rfc/rfc2060.txt :
      This flag can not be altered by the client.
[...]
      Note: The \Recent system flag is a special case of a
      session flag.  \Recent can not be used as an
      argument in a STORE command, and thus can not be
      changed at all.

This bug has been fixed in CVS. You can grab a snapshot of the
CVS version at http://snaps.php.net/. In case this was a documentation 
problem, the fix will show up soon at http://www.php.net/manual/.
In case this was a PHP.net website problem, the change will show
up on the PHP.net site and on the mirror sites.
