ob_start crashes the child

i got ob on in php.ini

Sorry i can't give you a backtrace (productive server, and to little time       
                                                                                
The script is quite simple: <? Ob_Start(); ?> is enough to let it crash         
(child dies)                                                                    
                                                                                
I have output buffering on in php.ini and use https                             
                                                                                
the ob_start thing is in the php prepend file                                   
                                                                                
configure:                                                                      
                                                                                
'./configure'                                                                   
         '--with-apache=/usr/src/apache_1.3.12/'                                
         '--with-zlib'                                                          
         '--with-gd'
