After session_start() or session_register() the browser does not display anything.

In the following example, only "This is visible" is shown. The same thing happens, when I start the session with "session_register()".

<?php
echo "This is visible";
session_start();
echo "This is not visible";
session_register("count");
$count++;
?>

Hello visitor, you have seen this page <? echo $count; ?> times.<p>

Does /tmp exist on your current drive?

Your session module fails to initialize.
Please try last version, if it still happens, please llok at the logs and submit any messages PHP outputs there with the bug report.

For starters, could you remove the first 5 lines of your test program?

Do not print anything before session_start - it won't work.
You can use output buffering if you need it.

Check your auto_prepend. Perhaps something
in there is printing a header...one way or
another, SOMETHING is sending a newline or
something, which causes the text/html header
to be sent, which stops the cookie from being
interpreted by the browser...etc.
