I am able to compile php4lib.a without a problem. However, when I build Apache (newest version) and link (following exactly the instructions in the INSTALL file), the following error occurs:

gcc -funsigned-char -I/usr/local/src/php4 -I/usr/local/src/php4/libzend -I/usr/local/src/php4/libzend -I/usr/local/src/php4 -DUSE_HSREGEX `./apaci` -o httpd buildmark.o modules.o modules/standard/libstandard.a modules/php4/libphp4.a main/libmain.a ./os/unix/libos.a ap/libap.a regex/libregex.a -Lmodules/php4 -L../modules/php4 -L../../modules/php4 -lmodphp4 -L/usr/local/src/php4/ext/pcre/pcrelib -lpcre -L/usr/local/src/php4/regex -lregex -L/usr/local/lib/mysql -lmysqlclient -lpam -lm -lcrypt -rdynamic -lcrypt

modules/php4/libphp4.a(internal_functions.o): In function `module_startup_modules':
/usr/local/src/php4/internal_functions.c(.data+0x50): undefined reference to `apache_module_entry'

Try a fresh build and read INSTALL.DSO. I know for sure that it works on that platform.
