Please check the php-4.0.4/main/php_config.h for this:
#define HAVE_UINT

If it doesn't exist, do this:

# rm config.cache ; ./configure

And after configure finishes, check the php-4.0.4/main/php_config.h again.
If that define isn't there even then, send me the config.log:
 sniper@php.net

And what is the Linux distribution you're using? Just saying GNU/Linux is
not that informative. :)

This is caused by having Openssl libraries in other
place than the configure expects them to be.

The configure must be fixed to check that
the libs for openssl really are found!
