I got an error:

stub.lo:<something>:File Truncated
ld exited with status 1

(or something like that)

stub.c in the base of the source tree is actually 1 byte long (the other 2 stub.c file are 0 bytes).  I made the one in the base 0 bytes also, and this fixed the problem.
